Rule 161. Spearing IIHF Definition. A player who stabs an opponent or attempts to stab an opponent with the end of the stick blade, whether or not the stick is being carried with one or both hands. Contact to the opponent is not necessary for the penalty to be assessed. 1. A player who attempts to spear an opponent will be assessed a double minor and misconduct penalty. 2. A player who spears an opponent will be assessed either a major and automatic game-misconduct penalty or a match penalty. 3. A player who recklessly endangers an opponent by spearing will be assessed a match penalty.
